Sewing Project for a Renaissance Faire!

June 13, 2008

I posted a few days ago that I’m working from simplicity 3635 and I’m making a corset with over 30 yards of boning in it, wowsers, I have a few pics of the start of this project that I thought I would share.

One is the pattern pieces cut out and a close up of the striped fabric I’m using.  The skirt will be absolutely beautiful (Mccall’s 4090) it’ll be olve and rust colored panels, I’ll post pictures of that when I get started on it. I’m also making a man’s costume for my boyfriend, I’ll post that as it progresses.  And… I’m making a jet black corset (same pattern) for my best friend, it’ll be so awesome! Needle work and embroidery will need to be done on the corset in the colors from the skirt, I love details!

I am currently working on the same pattern I was wondering how you find the instructions. I find them a little vague and missing out on important details. I just finished putting in all the boning in between the interfacing panels. Now I wonder when do I attach the Front panels and the lining. I am thinking that it was wrong to have the interfacing hold the boning, was it supposed to be the front and the interfacing?! It doesnt say! If your way is easier then let me know!

I just bought the simplicity 3635 pattern and I want your advice. The pattern isn’t exactly clear on what fabric they used for the corset or the panniers. When I made a Civil war corset from simplicity 9769, I found that poplin worked very well. Do you think that this would work for the 18th century one as well? what type of fabric did you use?

Also, I’m not sure if you are making the panniers, but if you are do you think that a plain cotton would stretch out of shape?

They also tell you to make your own bias tape and to sew the eyelets by hand. Wouldn’t bias tape bought ata store work just as well and couldn’t you use metal eyelets?
